Campbell-Tintah School to hold ceremony honoring late NFL player Errol Mann
Celebration of 1959 graduate coincides with Homecoming activities
The public is invited to an informal ceremony at Campbell-Tintah High School at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30 to honor the late Errol Mann. Mann was a former NFL player and a Class of 1959 graduate from the school.
In recognition of its 50th anniversary, the NFL presented a golden football to Campbell-Tintah recently to acknowledge Mann’s achievements with the NFL and the roots from which he came.
Mann was a placekicker who played in the NFL from 1968-1978. He was a member of the Oakland Raiders’ Super Bowl XI winning team. When attempting kicks, he used a now-rarely practiced straight-on style.
He led the NFL in extra points and extra points scored being a perfect 41 of 41 extra points in 1970, and in 1976 he played for both the Detroit Lions and the Oakland Raiders, but made only 8 of 22 field goals in the regular season.
1977 may have been the best season of his career leading the NFL with extra points attempted at 42, extra points made at 39 and he led the NFL in points scored with 99.
Superintendent and Principal of Campbell Tintah Public Schools Kyle Edgerton explained the importance of Mann’s recognition by the NFL.
“It sends the message to students that it doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from, even Campbell (Minnesota), all you need is a dream, work hard and an undying determination to never give up,” he said. “Errol Mann’s life exemplifies this.”
The celebration coincides with the school’s homecoming events. After the ceremony, a pep rally is scheduled for 2 p.m., and an Errol Mann get-together of family and friends will be held from 3-5 p.m. The homecoming game will be played in Rosholt, South Dakota, at 7 p.m. Recognition of Errol Mann and the golden football will be given at halftime, along with the presentation of the school’s homecoming court.
To attend the ceremony, RSVP to the school at 218-630-5311.
